Pointsbet Sportsbook Overview

Pointsbet sportsbook began in Australia in 2015, bringing their innovative points betting offering to one of the largest sports betting markets. Pointsbet quickly became one of the largest bookmakers in Australia and in January of 2019 they launched in New Jersey. Pointsbet has been expanding as quickly as the other big US operators, having launched in Indiana and Iowa with a number of other states to follow in the coming months.

Pointsbetting explained

Pointsbet Sportsbook’s signature offering and name sake is a bet market they invented called the “points bet”.  Points bets are a unique type of bet offered on spreads, over/unders and props. The principle is simple, the more your bet wins by the more you win, and conversely the more the bet loses by the more you lose.  Your initial stake on a points bet market is multiplied by the difference between the final spread/total/prop and the initial line. For example if you bet $10 on the Knicks -5 and they win by 7 the bet would win $20 because they beat the line by 2 points x your $10 wager. Conversely if the Knicks only win by 3 the bet would lose $20.

Each market has a predefined “multiplier cap” which caps the amount that can be won or lost on a specific market. This varies from market to market and can be found in the “info” section of each market. You can also set your own custom market multiplier cap or “stop loss” when placing your bet.

Pointsbet witholds part of your balance upon placing the bet in order to cover any potential losses.  The market multiplier, whether standard or custom, determines the amount withheld.  You are always shown your max win, max loss and amount withheld before placing a points bet.
